Understanding Acne Scarring
Acne scarring is the permanent textural consequence of inflammation that reached the dermis. It is distinct from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is a colour change that fades on its own. True scarring involves either lost collagen, producing an indentation, or excess collagen, producing a raised scar. Only treatments that reach the dermis and prompt remodelling will change it.
What Causes It
Types of Scarring
Ice Pick Scars
Narrow, deep, sharply defined tracks that extend well into the dermis. These are the most resistant to resurfacing and often need a combined approach.
Boxcar Scars
Round or oval depressions with defined vertical edges, most often on the cheeks and temples. These respond well to fractional resurfacing.
Rolling Scars
Broad, shallow undulations caused by fibrous tethering between the skin and the tissue beneath. Improvement comes from releasing the tether and rebuilding collagen.
Post-Inflammatory Marking
Flat red or brown marks with no textural change. Not scarring, and frequently mistaken for it. These fade over months and respond to Dye-VL rather than resurfacing.
How We Assess It
Every patient begins with a 60-minute consultation with a registered nurse, not a salesperson. We map the skin with Observe520X imaging, which shows hydration, collagen density, vascular activity and pigment sitting below the surface that is not yet visible to the eye. That is what a treatment plan is built from.
We do not treat on the day of a first consultation. You go home with a written plan and a full cost, and you come back only when you are certain. Injectable treatments are prescribed by an Independent Nurse Prescriber, and the clinic holds full CQC registration, which places us under the same regulatory framework as a GP surgery.
If the right answer is that a treatment will not help you, or that you need a referral rather than a course, we will say so.

Our Recommendation
Scarring is only worth treating once the acne itself is controlled, because new lesions will simply create new scars. We assess scar type first, since ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars respond very differently, and we are honest about the ceiling: meaningful improvement is realistic, complete erasure is not.

How do I know if I have scarring or just marks?
Look at it in side lighting. If the surface is smooth and the discolouration is flat, it is post-inflammatory marking and it will fade, usually within three to twelve months. If you can see or feel an indentation, that is scarring and it will not resolve on its own. The two need completely different treatments, which is why assessment matters.
What is the downtime after SupErb?
Expect redness and a sandpaper texture for roughly three to five days, with mild swelling in the first 48 hours. Most people plan it around a quiet week. You will need strict sun protection while healing, so we usually advise against booking it immediately before a holiday.
