Understanding Acne & Breakouts
Acne is an inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous unit, driven by four interacting factors: excess sebum, abnormal shedding of skin cells inside the follicle, colonisation by C. acnes bacteria, and the inflammatory response that follows. Effective treatment has to interrupt more than one of those at once, which is why topical products alone often plateau.

Excess Sebum Production
Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to overproduce oil, which combines with dead cells to block the follicle. This is why acne often flares at puberty, around the menstrual cycle, and during perimenopause.
Follicular Hyperkeratinisation
Skin cells lining the follicle fail to shed properly and accumulate, forming the microcomedone that every visible spot begins as.
Bacterial Colonisation
Cutibacterium acnes thrives in the blocked, oxygen-poor follicle and triggers an immune response, which is what turns a blocked pore into an inflamed lesion.
Inflammation
The immune response produces the redness, swelling and tenderness of an active spot, and is also what causes the post-inflammatory marking that outlasts it.
How We Assess It
Every patient begins with a 60-minute consultation with a registered nurse, not a salesperson. We map the skin with Observe520X imaging, which shows hydration, collagen density, vascular activity and pigment sitting below the surface that is not yet visible to the eye. That is what a treatment plan is built from.
We do not treat on the day of a first consultation. You go home with a written plan and a full cost, and you come back only when you are certain. Injectable treatments are prescribed by an Independent Nurse Prescriber, and the clinic holds full CQC registration, which places us under the same regulatory framework as a GP surgery.
If the right answer is that a treatment will not help you, or that you need a referral rather than a course, we will say so.

ClearSkin sessions start at £150 and acne typically needs a course of four to six spaced two to four weeks apart. If your acne is severe or scarring, the right answer may be a dermatology referral rather than laser, and we will tell you that at assessment.

Our Recommendation
Acne responds to consistency rather than intensity. We normally establish a tolerable topical routine first, add a course of ClearSkin to bring active inflammation down, and only then address any residual redness or marking with Dye-VL. Treating the marking before the acne is controlled wastes both your time and your money.

How much does acne treatment cost near Solihull?

Does laser actually work for acne?
For inflammatory acne, yes. ClearSkin works on two of the four drivers at once: it reduces sebaceous gland activity and targets the bacteria in the follicle, while the vacuum handpiece clears sebum during the session. It is less effective for purely comedonal acne, where topical retinoids do more, and it is not a substitute for medical management of severe nodulocystic acne.
When should I see a dermatologist instead?
If your acne is severe, deep and nodular, scarring as it heals, or has not responded to a properly followed topical routine, you may need systemic treatment such as oral isotretinoin, which we do not provide. We would rather refer you than sell you a course of laser that is not the right treatment.
Will treatment make my skin worse before it gets better?
Some patients see a short purge as follicular congestion clears, usually within the first two sessions. It settles. What we try hard to avoid is the barrier damage that comes from stacking too many actives at once, which is a far more common reason acne treatment stalls.
Can I have treatment while on acne medication?
It depends which. Topical retinoids are usually fine with an adjusted protocol. Oral isotretinoin is a contraindication for laser and we generally wait six months after finishing a course. Bring a full list of what you are taking to your consultation.
