Understanding Open Pores
Enlarged pores are determined by genetics but worsened by oil production, photoaging, and loss of elasticity. True skin confidence comes from improving the skin's natural health, effectively tightening the pore walls from within.
What Causes It
Contributing Factors
Excess Sebum Production
When oil mixes with dead skin cells, it clogs the pore. This stretches the pore wall, making it appear significantly larger.
Loss of Elasticity
As collagen protein levels drop, the skin around the pore becomes less supportive, causing the pore to "relax" and appear more open.
Sun Damage (Photoaging)
UV exposure weakens the collagen scaffold around pores and thickens the outer skin layer, leading to a more pronounced, dilated appearance.
How We Assess It
Every patient begins with a 60-minute consultation with a registered nurse, not a salesperson. We map the skin with Observe520X imaging, which shows hydration, collagen density, vascular activity and pigment sitting below the surface that is not yet visible to the eye. That is what a treatment plan is built from.
We do not treat on the day of a first consultation. You go home with a written plan and a full cost, and you come back only when you are certain. Injectable treatments are prescribed by an Independent Nurse Prescriber, and the clinic holds full CQC registration, which places us under the same regulatory framework as a GP surgery.
If the right answer is that a treatment will not help you, or that you need a referral rather than a course, we will say so.
Treatments We Use
Microneedling
Stimulates the natural wound-healing response to dramatically increase collagen, tightening the skin structure around the pores.
Alma Harmony iPixel
Fractional laser that creates microscopic channels to trigger deep remodelling and refine uneven skin texture.
SupErb Laser Resurfacing
Where texture is significantly uneven, fractional resurfacing addresses pore size and surface irregularity together.
Chemical Peels
Clinical-grade acidity that provide intensive exfoliation to clear congestion and improve overall skin texture.
Open Pores Treatment Pricing
From £150
- Alma Harmony laser, per sessionFrom £150
- SupErb resurfacing, per sessionFrom £600
- Initial consultation£50, redeemable in full
- Observe520X skin analysisIncluded
- Patch testRequired before treatment
Sessions start at £150 and pore refinement is a course treatment rather than a single appointment. Pore size is partly genetic, so the honest goal is meaningful refinement rather than elimination, and we will be clear about what is achievable for your skin at assessment.
Supporting It at Home
In-clinic treatment does the heavy lifting, but what you do daily determines how well the result holds. These are the categories that matter for this concern.
| Strategy | Clinical Benefit | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Oil Management | Clears congestion and refines pore size | Salicylic Acid (BHA) |
| Firming Remodelling | Tightens skin structure around the pore | Retinoids |
| Environmental Defense | Prevents photodamage that weakens pores | Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+ |
Our Recommendation
To achieve the best results, we recommend a combined approach: consistent use of targeted actives (Salicylic Acid and Retinoids) alongside a customised course of in-clinic treatments like iPixel laser for deeper rejuvenation and lasting refinement.
Open Pores Questions
How much does open pore treatment cost near Solihull?
Alma Harmony laser sessions start at £150 at our Yardley clinic, around 15 minutes from Solihull. Pore refinement responds best to a course rather than a single session. Your £50 consultation is redeemable in full and includes Observe520X analysis of sebaceous activity and surface texture.
Can pore size be permanently reduced?
Pore size is largely genetic, so the honest answer is that pores can be meaningfully refined but not eliminated. What treatment changes is the collagen scaffold supporting the pore wall and the congestion stretching it, both of which make pores appear considerably smaller. Maintenance holds the result; stopping entirely will see it drift back.
Why do my pores look worse than they used to?
Usually collagen loss rather than any change in oil production. As the structural support around each pore weakens, the pore relaxes and appears more open, which is why pore concerns often surface in the late thirties and forties in people who never had oily skin.
Is microneedling or laser better for pores?
They work differently and often together. Microneedling drives collagen production through controlled micro-injury and suits shallower texture concerns. Fractional laser reaches deeper and does more for combined texture and sun damage. Which we recommend depends on what the skin analysis shows.
Is open pore treatment available near Solihull?
Yes. We treat enlarged pores and uneven texture from our CQC-registered clinic in Yardley, Birmingham, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Solihull town centre via the A45 Coventry Road.
