How Long Do Dermal Fillers Really Last? A Nurse’s Guide to Longevity
As practitioners committed to evidence-based care, we believe it is vital to share the reality of how these treatments interact with your body over time.
The Science of Filler Longevity
Historically, it was believed that hyaluronic acid fillers were fully metabolised and broken down by the body within a year. Recent ultrasound and MRI studies have revealed a very different reality. We now know that filler can remain present in facial tissues for up to 10 years.
While the physical gel may still be detectable on a scan a decade later, it does not necessarily mean it is still providing the cosmetic enhancement you originally sought. As we go through the natural ageing process, our facial bones remodel, fat pads shrink, and tissues reposition. The filler may still be present, but due to these anatomical shifts, it can migrate or simply stop doing the job for which it was intended. This is why you might feel your results have faded, even if the product itself has not completely dissolved.

Longevity Expectations by Treatment Area
Because different areas of the face experience different levels of movement and require different types of filler, the visible lifespan of your results will vary.
Lips: The mouth is a highly mobile area, constantly used for speaking, eating, and smiling. The visible plumping effect typically wanes faster here, usually around 6 to 9 months, even though traces of the product may linger much longer.
Tear Troughs (Under Eyes): This delicate area experiences very little mechanical movement. Filler placed here can look fantastic for 12 to 18 months, and ultrasound studies frequently show product remaining in this region for many years.
Cheeks and Mid-Face: Placed deeper onto the bone to provide structural support, volumising fillers in the cheeks usually offer a visible lifting effect for 12 to 24 months before a top-up is considered.
Jawline and Chin: Thicker, more robust fillers are used in the lower face to mimic bone. The sharp, contoured aesthetic result usually lasts 18 to 24 months, with structural support remaining long after the initial crispness softens.

Our Clinic’s Philosophy
Understanding that dermal filler persists far longer than previously thought completely validates our clinical ethos. Because we know the product stays in the tissue, our primary goal is to prevent the “puffy” or “overfilled” look that occurs when too much product is layered over time.
We stand by a strict set of principles for every patient we treat:
Using As Little As Possible: We aim for maximum aesthetic impact with minimal volume. By using conservative amounts of filler, we can achieve beautiful, natural results without weighing down the facial tissues.
Respecting Individual Anatomy: Every face ages differently. We do not rely on standard templates. Instead, we carefully assess your unique bone structure and tissue quality to place product only where it will truly benefit you.
Selecting Premium Quality Products: Not all dermal fillers are created equal. We exclusively use premium quality fillers that integrate smoothly into the tissue and are less prone to unpredictable migration.
Applying the Latest Scientific Research: The field of medical aesthetics is constantly evolving. By staying continuously updated on studies regarding filler longevity, facial anatomy, and tissue ageing, we ensure our techniques are both exceptionally safe and highly effective.
Your face is not a blank canvas to be filled, but a dynamic structure that changes over time. By respecting the science and your unique anatomy, we can help you look refreshed and natural for years to come.
