What If I Decide Not to Have Aesthetic Treatments Anymore?

At DG Aesthetics, we believe that your aesthetic journey is entirely your own. It is a question we are sometimes asked by patients: what actually happens if I decide to simply stop having treatments?

Whether your priorities change, your budget shifts, or you simply feel you no longer want to continue with injectables or skin therapies, it is completely okay to stop. As medical professionals, our primary role is to support your health, wellbeing, and confidence at every stage of your life without any pressure to continue treatments.

If you do decide to step away from aesthetic procedures, here is exactly what you can expect to happen.

The Underlying Process of Ageing

To understand what happens when you stop treatments, it is important to understand how the face ages. Ageing is a continuous, dynamic process. It is not just about wrinkles appearing on the surface of the skin.

Significant changes are happening structurally beneath the surface. As we age, we experience bone loss (resorption) around the entire skull. The eye sockets widen, the jawline recedes, and the cheekbones flatten. At the same time, the fat pads in our face begin to shrink and descend, and our skin is constantly ageing as it depletes its natural stores of collagen and elastin.

Even when you are having treatments with dermal fillers and Botox, these structural changes associated with ageing are still happening underneath.

Why We Take a Calculated Approach

This continuous change is exactly why we are so calculated and precise with the treatments we deliver. We are never just treating lines on a face. We are constantly assessing a foundation that is actively changing.

This underlying bone loss and structural shift is also a common reason why your Botox dose and placement requirements might differ over the years. As the foundations of the face change, the way your facial muscles sit and contract will also change. A treatment plan that worked perfectly five years ago may need adjusting by our medical team to accommodate your current anatomy.

What Happens When Injectables Wear Off?

If you decide to stop having treatments, the premium dermal fillers and botulinum toxin we use will simply be broken down and metabolised safely by your body over time.

You will not suddenly age overnight, nor will your skin "collapse". Your face will gradually return to its natural baseline. However, because the underlying ageing process has continued while you were having treatments, you may notice the natural signs of ageing more prominently once the products have fully worn off.

Managing Long Term Skin Conditions

If you have been having treatments or using medical grade skincare to manage a long term chronic skin condition, such as rosacea or melasma, the outcome of stopping is slightly different.

Aesthetic treatments and prescribed skincare protocols often manage and suppress the symptoms of these conditions rather than curing them completely. If you stop these treatments, it is highly likely that the redness, inflammation, or pigmentation associated with rosacea and melasma will eventually return.

The skin is an organ that is constantly ageing and reacting to environmental factors. Because of this, it requires ongoing support to maintain good, healthy function. Even if you choose to stop injectable treatments, we always recommend maintaining a supportive, evidence based skincare routine to keep your skin barrier healthy and resilient.
