What If My Botox Treatment Goes Wrong?
A Guide to Safety and Complications
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is one of the most popular and effective treatments in aesthetic medicine today. At DG Aesthetics, we see first-hand the incredible confidence boost these treatments can provide.
Before diving into the risks, it is helpful to understand what Botox is actually used for. As medical professionals, we use it for a variety of indications:
Reduction in dynamic lines and wrinkles: Smoothing out crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead creases.
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating): Effectively treating areas such as the armpits, hands, and feet to restore comfort and confidence.
While it is widely celebrated for its fantastic results, it is perfectly natural for patients to wonder what happens if a treatment goes wrong. Like any medical procedure, botulinum toxin injections carry potential risks.
Here are the known side effects and exactly how we manage them:
Localised Reactions (Bruising, Swelling, or Redness)
These are the most common side effects and typically resolve within a few days. We minimise this risk with careful injection techniques. If bruising does occur, we can advise on the use of cold compresses or Arnica to speed up recovery.
Asymmetry or 'Spock Brow'
Sometimes facial muscles react differently to the toxin, resulting in one side of the face looking slightly uneven or an eyebrow arching too high. We can easily correct this with a small adjustment dose during your review appointment.
Ptosis (Drooping Brow or Eyelid)
This is a rare complication that can happen if the toxin affects unintended muscles. However, sometimes people are simply more sensitive to the toxin than others. This is why we take a cautious but effective approach to dosing, especially if a person has not had the treatment before.
It is best to think of your first treatment as a two-phase treatment. We can always add more toxin if needed at your review appointment. We schedule these reviews between the two and three-week mark. Two weeks is the earliest we can assess you, as it takes this long for the product to reach its maximum effect. Three weeks is the latest we will top up the dose, as injecting further toxin after this window can increase the risk of your body building an immune resistance to the product.
Because we are medically trained, we understand precise facial anatomy to minimise the risks of a droop. If an eyelid ptosis does occur, we can prescribe specific eye drops, such as apraclonidine, to stimulate the muscle and temporarily lift the eyelid. In the case of a brow ptosis resulting in a heavy feeling, we can sometimes strategically place a small amount of toxin into the depressor muscles to lift the area and alleviate the heaviness.
Iatrogenic Botulism
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently added iatrogenic botulism to its safety updates. This is a very rare but serious potential side effect where the toxin spreads beyond the treatment area, causing systemic muscle weakness, blurred vision, or breathing difficulties. If this were ever suspected, our medical training means we can immediately recognise the signs, provide urgent clinical assessment, and initiate swift referral to emergency hospital care.
The Importance of Choosing Regulated Medical Professionals
Dealing with complications safely requires in-depth medical knowledge and prescription rights. At DG Aesthetics, you are always in the hands of trained medical professionals who are fully insured and uniquely equipped to handle any adverse events.
We keep accurate, detailed medical records for every single patient. This means we know exactly what product, batch number, and dose was used previously, allowing us to make safe clinical decisions and respond precisely should a problem ever occur.
We are also proud members of both the Aesthetics Complications Expert Group (ACE) and the Complications in Medical Aesthetics Collaborative (CMAC). This ensures we are continually updated on the latest safety protocols and have immediate access to a wider network of medical experts for secondary advice.
The Danger of the Unregulated Market
One of the primary reasons aesthetic treatments go wrong is the rising number of unregulated, unlicensed individuals performing procedures. If you see Botox being offered at a remarkably cheap price, it is crucial to be wary.
We strictly source our products from reputable, licensed pharmacies, ensuring a clear and verifiable paper trail for every vial we use. Non-healthcare professionals offering cut-price treatments may be obtaining counterfeit or substandard products from illegitimate sources. Injecting unverified substances exponentially increases the risk of serious side effects, including the severe systemic complications of iatrogenic botulism highlighted by the MHRA.
The Medical Difference
It is important to be completely transparent. Complications are not isolated to non-medics; they can and do happen to the most experienced medical professionals too. However, it is our comprehensive background knowledge of anatomy and physiology, combined with our medical experience, that makes the crucial difference. This expertise is exactly what is required to best support, diagnose, and treat our patients safely in the rare event of a complication.
Your face and your health are simply not worth the risk. By choosing a regulated medical clinic, you are investing in safety, accountability, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly who is treating you.
