What If My Dermal Fillers Treatment Goes Wrong?
A Guide to Safety and Expert Care
Dermal fillers are an incredible tool in aesthetic medicine, used to restore volume, smooth deep lines, and enhance facial contours. At DG Aesthetics, we love the beautiful and natural-looking results they can achieve.

However, we understand that deciding to have an injectable treatment is a big step. It is perfectly normal to ask what happens if things do not go to plan. Just like any medical procedure, dermal fillers come with potential risks and side effects.
Premium Products Backed by Science
To minimise risk from the very start, we only use premium quality dermal fillers, specifically Revanesse and Juvéderm. We choose these specific brands because they are backed by extensive scientific studies proving their safety, predictability, and efficacy. We never compromise by using cheap or unregulated products.
Potential Complications and Our Medical Management
Here are the known complications associated with dermal fillers and exactly how we are equipped to handle them:
Common Localised Reactions (Swelling and Bruising)
Mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site is very common and usually resolves within a few days. We minimise this by using gentle injection techniques and, where appropriate, blunt tipped cannulas.
Lumps, Bumps, and Nodules
Occasionally, a patient might feel a small lump under the skin. This can sometimes happen shortly after treatment or even appear as a delayed reaction weeks or months later. Because the hyaluronic acid fillers we use are temporary and reversible, we can manage this easily. Depending on the cause, we might recommend massage, or we can use a prescription only enzyme called hyaluronidase to safely dissolve the filler.
Infections
Any time the skin barrier is broken, there is a small risk of infection. We maintain strict clinical hygiene standards to prevent this. However, if an infection does occur, our status as prescribing medical professionals means we can immediately assess you and prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics directly, without you having to wait for an NHS GP appointment.
Vascular Occlusion
This is a very rare but serious complication where dermal filler inadvertently enters or compresses a blood vessel, which can deprive the skin of oxygenated blood. If left untreated, this can lead to tissue damage (necrosis) or, in exceptionally rare cases, visual impairment.
This is where our medical expertise is absolutely crucial. We have an in depth understanding of facial anatomy to avoid high risk zones. If a vascular occlusion is ever suspected, we can immediately recognise the signs and administer emergency high dose hyaluronidase to dissolve the blockage and promptly restore blood flow.
