"Will Sunscreen Stop Me Getting a Holiday Tan?" The Honest Truth

It is one of the most common confessions we hear in the clinic before the summer holidays. You have spent all year looking forward to your trip, and you want to come back with a beautiful, healthy glow. Many people admit they skip or skimp on their sunscreen because they believe it will completely block them from getting a tan.

"Will Sunscreen Stop Me Getting a Holiday Tan?" The Honest Truth

Let us set the record straight on this very common skincare myth.

The Short Answer: No, it will not stop you tanning.

The reality is that no sunscreen blocks 100 percent of UV rays. Even if you are meticulously applying a high-quality product, some radiation still gets through. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 filters out about 97 percent of UVB rays, while an SPF 50 filters around 98 percent.

Those remaining rays are still reaching your skin, especially when you are spending hours by the pool or on the beach. This means your body will still naturally produce pigment, and you will still get a tan while wearing sunscreen.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Tanning

As aesthetic nurses, we have to be completely honest with you. While a tan might look lovely, it is not actually a sign of health. It is a visible sign of trauma.

When UV rays penetrate your skin, they cause damage to your cellular DNA. Your skin responds by producing melanin, which is the brown pigment that causes the tanned look. Your body does this to try and create a protective shield over your cells to prevent further injury. Whether you burn or just gently tan, structural damage is still happening deep within the skin.

Why Wearing SPF Actually Gives You a Better Result

If you go into the sun unprotected to speed up the tanning process, you are highly likely to burn. Burnt, traumatised skin eventually peels, taking your new colour right off with it in a matter of days.

By wearing a high-factor sunscreen and reapplying it every two hours, you allow your skin to acclimatise slowly. The colour develops gradually without the severe trauma of a burn. Because your skin barrier remains intact and healthy, your tan will actually look smoother and last significantly longer.

The Long-Term Cost

Unprotected sun exposure is the single biggest cause of premature ageing. Every time you bake in the sun without protection, you are aggressively destroying your collagen and elastin. This is exactly what leads to deep wrinkles, sagging, crepey texture, and stubborn dark spots down the line.

A temporary two-week holiday tan is simply not worth permanently accelerating the ageing process or increasing your risk of skin cancer. You can absolutely enjoy your time in the sun, but you must protect your skin while doing it.
